Scope

Welcome to the inaugural workshop on Software Engineering in Healthcare Systems, co-located with ICSE 2016 in Austen, Texas. Healthcare delivery is undergoing unprecedented transformation. At the micro level, patient care delivery is changing with patient participatory medicine and personalized medicine providing the means of involving patients in the design and delivery of their care. At a meso level we see an increase in collaborative care delivery and the integration of hospitals and care centres into integrated practice units to enable collaboration across time and space. At a macro level Big Data is enabling unprecedented analysis of healthcare data to understand complex relationships as part of understanding and shaping healthcare transformation. Safety is also being challenged on a number of fronts: communication links open the door to security and privacy concerns; and when systems do not work dependably in the way they were intended to work, users find work-arounds that compromise safety and security. This workshop will focus on research and development of health information systems, and software-intensive medical devices. Our goal is to discuss recent research innovations and challenges in these areas, and to continue developing an interdisciplinary, international community with an effective research, educational and industrial agenda for supporting software engineering in the healthcare sector.
