Estimates of the future availability and expense of fossil fuels are functions of advances in discovery and extraction technologies, whose robustness and efficiency are, in turn, functions of advances in information technology and mathematical algorithms. Advances in computing, simulation models, big data analytics, parameter inversion, data assimilation, and uncertainty quantification can translate very quickly into practices in the field. Seismic imaging techniques such as Reverse Time Migration (RTM), Full Waveform Inversion (FWI), Electromagnetic (EM) modeling, and inversion techniques, as well as the latest reservoir simulation technologies exploiting compositional models, require powerful HPC systems. Information technology providers are focusing their efforts to minimize the turnaround time for seismic and simulation workloads. Architecture, programming models adapted to new heterogeneous architectures, and software engineering methodologies, are all changing underneath the abstract interface of a mathematical model, making it a challenge to port efficiently to the most capable environments and keep the workforce proficient in them. The facilities requirements also present an ongoing challenge for the upstream industry and its HPC community. Join the conversation about this journal
SJR

The SJR is a size-independent prestige indicator that ranks journals by their 'average prestige per article'. It is based on the idea that 'all citations are not created equal'. SJR is a measure of scientific influence of journals that accounts for both the number of citations received by a journal and the importance or prestige of the journals where such citations come from It measures the scientific influence of the average article in a journal, it expresses how central to the global scientific discussion an average article of the journal is.

Citations per document

This indicator counts the number of citations received by documents from a journal and divides them by the total number of documents published in that journal. The chart shows the evolution of the average number of times documents published in a journal in the past two, three and four years have been cited in the current year. The two years line is equivalent to journal impact factor ™ (Thomson Reuters) metric.
