Madrid, March 23rd, 2011 Scimago Lab’s blog just posted a new entry by Prof. Felix de Moya Anegon, entitled Institutional Collaboration in Global Science where a Collaboration Map of worldwide Research Institutions is discussed. An interesting thing about the proposed map, which has been built using a “force-based layout”-like (aka “spring embedding”) algorithm, is that locates and brings together the institutions according to their collaboration relationships. An immediate advantage of these kinds of visualizations is the simplicity with which complex patterns of connection and clustering are exposed at a glance, which are not easily noted otherwise.
Throughout the post, Prof. De Moya analyzes worldwide research collaboration links at a global level and extract general conclusions to prove the usefulness of the maps elaborated using these visualization techniques.

We encourage you to discuss this (and other posts) through the comments; also suggestions for future post are also welcomed.
