Scope

The journal ''Deutsch als Fremdsprache'' (‘German as a Foreign Language’) is issued by the Herder Institute (University of Leipzig, Faculty of Philology) and the association interDaF at the Herder Institute. The journal is issued quarterly. ''Deutsch als Fremdsprache'' was first published in 1964, thus making it the oldest and most prestigious journal in the field of German as a Foreign Language. Its title “Deutsch als Fremdsprache” (German as a Foreign Language) is what has since coined the prevalent name for the entire discipline of teaching and researching German as a foreign language. Over the decades, the journal has developed into one of the most important publications in the field. This is most notably due to both the internationally diverse range of contributors as well as the worldwide circulation of the journal. The journal hence contributes significantly to the field’s further academic development and continuing differentiation as it presents results from scholarly research and applications in the sub-disciplines of linguistics, applied linguistics, foreign language acquisition / teaching / methodology, cultural studies, literary studies, and phonetics and phonology. There are sections dedicated to the discussion of new teaching and learning materials as well as to review articles covering the most recent literature in the field. Another focus of the journal is German as a Second Language, especially with regard to any potential intersections and similarities with German as a Foreign Language. The editorial staff is comprised of an international advisory board of experts who revise and prepare the journal for publication. All journal articles undergo a double blind review before publication. Join the conversation about this journal
